Dear Comrades,
All India Insurance Pensioners’ Association calls upon all our units to observe October 1, 2019 as the International Day of Older Persons as per the declaration of United Nations General Assembly made on December 14, 1990. Trade Union International has given a call this year for the day to be observed as International Day of Older Persons and Pensioners. There are about 700 million people above 60 years of age now and increase will be greatest and rapidity will be more in developing countries.
This day signifies enhanced attention to the needs of and challenges faced by the elder persons is required and the essential contribution the elders can continue to make to the functioning of society stressed.
This year’s theme is Journey to Age, Equality and that implies development is feasible only if it is all age inclusive and that empowers and promotes social economic and political inclusion of all irrespective of age, ethnicity etc., and human rights lie at the core of all these efforts.
While the day can be observed by younger ones through associations with elders in the family and/or neighbourhood in old age homes or NGOs, elders can join observance with determination and conviction that they continue to be useful to the society.
All India Insurance Pensioners’ Association requests units to observe the day in a fitting manner and join celebrations in their area.
With Greetings,
Comradely yours.
General Secretary
